Leaf Coaster Pattern

Came across this design from winterblue. The original size served perfect for a tea coaster but I tried enlarging it and came up with a slightly larger piece – something in between a coaster and a placemat.
It took a couple of trials, some calculations (after all the stitches have to be even on both sides), and finally got a larger leaf to accompany the smaller ones.

- Yarn: 6 ply pure cotton yarn. (brand – Anchor mercerised knitting cotton art. 4057 )
- Colour of your choice
- Hook: 3 mm
- Notions: Scissors and blunt tip needle

Ch 6, sl st to first st to make a loop
Round 2: 2ch, dc in next dc, 1ch, [dc2tog in same and next dc, 1ch] around, sl st in top of 1st dc (=16 dc clusters, 16 1ch sp)
Round 3: Sl st in first 1ch sp, 1ch, 3sc in same ch space, (2sc, 1hdc) in next 1ch space, (2hdc, 1dc) in next 1ch space, (3dc in next ch space) 4 times, (2dc, 1tr) in next 1ch space, (1tr, 2dc) in next 1ch space, [3dc in next ch space] 4 times, (1dc, 2hdc) in next 1ch sp, (1hdc, 2sc) in next 1ch space, 3sc in last ch space, join with sl st to 1st sc (=48 sts)
Round 4: 1ch, sc in 1st sc, 2ch, (skip 1 st, sc in next st, 2ch) around, sl st in 1st sc (=24 2ch spaces).
Round 5: Sl st in ch 2 space, 1 ch, 3sc in same space and in next space, (2sc, 1hdc) in next space, (1hdc, 2dc) in next space, 3dc in next 7 spaces, (2dc, 1tr) in next space, (1tr, 2dc) in next space, 3dc in next 7 spaces, (1dc, 2hdc) in next space, (1hdc, 2sc) in next space, 3sc in next 2 spaces. Join with sl st to first 1ch.
Round 6: 1ch, sc in first st, 3ch, (skip 2 st, sc in next st) around. Join with sl st to first st. (24 ch3 spaces)
Round 7: Sl st to ch3 space, 1ch, 4sc in next 2 ch3 spaces, (2sc, 2hdc) in next space, (2hdc, 2dc) in next space, 4dc in next 6 ch3 spaces, (2dc, 2tr) in next space, (3tr, 1dtr) in next space, 3ch, (1dtr, 3tr) in next space, (2tr, 2dc) in next space, 4dc in next 6 ch3 spaces, (2dc, 2hdc) in next space, (2hdc, 2sc) in next space, 4sc in next two spaces. Join with sl st to first st.
For stem: 7ch, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 5 sts. Join with sl st to first st of Round 7.
Round 8: 4sc in next 4 sts, 3ch, (to form a picot, insert hood in base of ch 3), (4ch, picot) repeat 10 times, sc in next 3 st, (2sc, picot, 2sc) in ch3 space of Round 7, sc in next 3 st, (4ch, picot) repeat 11 times. Join with sl st to base of stem.
